Description of the Region
Laguna de Limoncocha and its surrounding areas, Laguna Negra or Yanacocha form the reserve.
This reserve is highly dependent on the Napo river and contains approximately two and a half
square kilometers of water bodies. Great biodiversity is found here, including species such
as black caimans.
According to Holdridge's classification, all of the life zones found here are related to the
tropical rain forest. However, other ecosystems, such as permanent swamps, inundated lands,
terra firma and water ecosystems are found. The relative humidity of the area is approximately
80 percent, but on clear, sunny days the humidity drops to 50 percent and the temperature rises
to up to 30C. Due to these changes in climate leaves, the environment has developed certain
mechanisms against desiccation. Some leaves have thicker cut ides (similar to fur) and some
are covered by lichens and moss.
