Description of the Region

Sediment deposits from sea currents have formed an extensive complex of channels and islands in the reserve. Higher continental and humid lands encompass a dense mangrove forest and the remains of a dry tropical forest. The site also includes various lakes and estuaries. The importance of the reserve was acknowledged during the RAMSAR Convention for the protection of aquatic environments worldwide.
