Welcome to Macas City

This small but important town is the capital of the province of Morona-Santiago. Quiet, and attractive town in the Oriente. It has four centuries of history as a Spanish trading and missionary outpost. An old mule trail still joins Macas with the highlands near Riobamba. A road is planned which will follow this trail, and large segments of it have now been completed. A road north to Puyo has recently been completed, but requires crossing two river bridges on foot.

Despite its history, Macas is essentially a modern and developing town. The bus terminal and airport are both relatively new, and the main plaza was completed only in 1983.
