For many people, the Thursday morning market of Saquisili is the main reason for coming to Latacunga. Ecuadorian economists consider Saquisili to have the most important Indian village market in the country, and many travelers rate it as the best they've seen in Ecuador. It is not a tourist-oriented market, though there are the usual few Otavalan Indians selling their sweaters and weavings. This market is for the inhabitants of remote Indian villages who flood into town to buy or sell everything from bananas to homemade shotguns to herbal remedies to strings of piglets. The majority of the Indians from the area wear little felt porkpie hats and red ponchos.

There are eight different plazas, each of which sell specific goods. One of my favorites is the animal market, a cacophonous affair with screaming pigs playing a major role. Cattle, sheep and a few llamas are also common. The animal market is almost a kilometer out of town.

PASOCHOA FOREST RESERVE (1 day Tour / Same Prices)

Located 30 Km. southeast of Quito, one of the few indisturbed areas with humid Andean Forest, located inside a volcano, in itīs collapsed volcanic caldera (2700 m.), over 12 species of birds can be seen, also highland trees & shrubs, palm trees, Andean Laurel, Orchids, Bromeliads, ferns, lichens and more epiphytic plants. Birders and naturalist will apreciate the pristine nature hiking for 2- 3 hours trough the trails.

2.5 hours from Quito, you will enjoy a humid Andean Forest with hot springs, hiking trough a trail with Orchids, Bromeliads, ferns, lichens and more epiphytic plants. Birders and naturalist will apreciate the environment hiking for 45 Min.- 1 hour trough the trails, after hiking you can enjoy several pools with the hot springs from the surrounding volcanoes.
