Description of the Region

The Llanganates Mountain Range will always be linked to the memory of General Rumiñahui, who heroically defended the treasures of the Kingdom of Quito.
This legendary mountain range gives the park its name. The park encompasses one of the most ancient commerce and communication routes of the Andean and Amazon region. Archeological evidence shows that the Pastaza valley was once an area of cultural and commercial exchange among the inhabitants of the region.
Llanganates comes from the Quichua word "llanganati", which means "beautiful hill". The people of the region were astonished by the incredibly beauty they witnessed as the sun set over the mountains.
