Description of the Region
The park covers the important basins of the Napo, Yasuni, Tiputini,
Nashino.
Coconaco rivers and many tributaries of the Curaray river. The Curaray
river forms the southern boundary of the park. Along the Napo, from
the city of Francisco de Orellana (Coca) to the village of Nuevo
Rocafuerte, the river runs for approximately 300 kilometers, flowing
past more than 200 islands on its way.
The origins of the rivers in Yasuni National Park are varied. Some
originate in the Andes and are known as white rivers for the high
amounts of sediments they carry from the mountain range. Others
originate in the Amazon and are known as clear water rivers due
to their level of contact with decomposing leaves. Finally, the
black water rivers are tea colored as a result of the leaves and
tannins they carry. The darkest of all are the ones that come from
swamp waters.
The entire park is located within the area that Holdridge described
as tropical humid forest. Three types of jungle are found here: terra
firma (non-floodable highland), the seasonally-floodable area, and the
permanently-flooded forest. Even though the forest remains well preserved,
there have been recent threats to the park from petroleum activities and
colonization. The Yasuni and Nashiño rivers, in the northwestern part, are
the principal areas of colonization. As a result of colonization,
deforestation, and overuse of the natural resources, the ecosystems
have been transformed into low production and low biodiversity farmlands.
