Description of the Region
Cotopaxi, one of the worlds highest active volcanoes, is found in the central
part of the park. To the northwest lies Rumiñahui, another impressive mountain.
Between these two mountains is the valley of Limpiopungo. Despite its altitude,
the park contains a great variety of mammal and bird species.
Near Cotopaxi National Park is El Boliche National Recreational Area. Almost 50
percent of the area is covered with pine trees, planted in 1928 as a scientific
experiment to prove that foreign conifers could adapt to high-altitude ecosystems.
Cotopaxi National Park and El Boliche National Recreational Area are administered
separately and each one is considered different organization. There is a possibility
that they will be linked in the future.
The magnificent natural scenery and strikingly different landscapes in both areas is
the major attraction for tourists. There is clear water and rushing rivers and, from
time to time, captivating waterfalls.
